Humble Beginning of Dgcustomerfirst 

Hard work is the key to success. This adage is what underpins the achievements of Dollar General. On June 1, 1955, James Luther and his son Cal Turner founded Dollar General in Springfield, Kentucky.

In 1964, James Luther passed, but the company continued to grow, that four years later, it had reached over $40 million annual sales and $1.5 million annual profit. Four years after James’ passing, The Dollar General also went public and already had 14,000 storefronts worldwide. 

In 2000 DG set up a new corporate headquarters in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. By the end of this year, sales exceeded $4 billion. The growth was non-stop that in 2002, it recorded $6 billion in sales, but Cal Jr. retired in 2002.

In 2003, David Perdue succeeded Cal, and DG penetrated the grocery market with the Dollar General Market launched in 2003. A year later, Dollar General expanded to low-cost Asian markets. They opened a sourcing office in Hong Kong. In 2007, Perdue resigned, and David Bere became interim CEO.

    • I enjoy shopping at dollar general regular. The prices are good and the customer service is also good. The stores are normally clean and free of stock except when I get a truck in. Thank you

  1. Employees are friendly and helpful but I really would like to see the clearance item’s actually have a price marked on them. The signs on the clearance isle say that the item’s are the price they are marked they have a blank yellow sticker on them but no wsy to tell the price unless you have a employee stay right there and check each item and I wouldn’t do that so dg missed sales.

  2. I like the customer service. The employees are very friendly and always willing to help me with my needs

  3. Great customer service, nice clean isles, everything is easy to find, I love the Dollar General app. I use it every time I shop. Being a Dollar General rewards customer definitely has its perks. I use the scanner and find coupons I didn’t know existed. It’s a great place to save time and money.
